My company participated in United Way’s annual Bookmark Contest, which promotes children’s literacy. To get started, a request was sent out to all employees, inviting those with an interest in design to participate. I was the first to join the project.
To create a bookmark that would capture the attention of young grade-schoolers, I chose bold and fun images. I made sure the front of the bookmark featured a split-level monster image, so its bright, funny face would peek out of the book, begging for the reader’s attention from a distance. To maintain the bookmark’s playful style on the back, I added a full-body monster holding books along with the simple phrase: “Devour Books.”
My main goal was to ensure the bookmark was non-didactic and visually engaging, which I believe the bold images and minimal text achieve effectively. Once the design was complete, it was sent to our company office manager for submission to United Way.
